A Mocha For Your Tuesday: A Surprising Way We Destroy Reputation

“Never talk badly about your spouse to other people or vent about them online. Protect your spouse at all times and in all places.”

~Dave Willis

In a culture where social media is used as place to vent our feelings, this is something to take seriously! In a moment of anger or resentment, giving just a vague (or not so vague) hint of your frustration with your spouse can make you feel “better”. Like maybe you got the upper hand somehow.

But vague or not, it’s something we need to be so careful to guard ourselves against.

{And being vague is sometimes even worse because it opens people’s imaginations to speculation – and the lines between speculation and reality can be blurred in the human mind. Unfair? Yes. But a result of our actions, nonetheless.}

It goes beyond slandering your spouse’s reputation in public. When you act on your angry feelings in a public way, you’re solidifying your anger in a concrete way. You’ve just made it more difficult for you to work toward forgiveness and reconciliation. That goes triple if your spouse sees your status or hears your phone call.

We often regret the things we do and say when we come from a place of reaction.

This goes far beyond social media. Be so careful how you talk to your friends about your spouse. Even if you know they’ll “understand”, remember that you’re tarnishing your spouse’s reputation in your anger. Things might blow over for you – and you’ll always know what a great person you married – but those stories of frustrations you’ve spread around aren’t something that can be erased.

This is hard and it’s real, but marriage is worth the fight!
